Cowichan Valley Independent Living Resource Center offers a Volunteer Income Tax Program(CVITP)!
The CVITP is provided by volunteers who work year round to file taxes and assist with questions around tax filing, returns, and documents. Anyone who meets CVILRC’c tax program eligibility can bring their taxes documents to CVILRC (531 Canada Ave) to have their taxes e-filed. This program is funded through donations from the provincial ministry as well as from people in the Cowichan Valley and surrounding areas.
What do you need to bring in order to file your taxes?
- All T4s, T5s, and any other tax papers for the year you wish to file
- Complete CVILRC’s Income Tax program intake form – printable copies here: Client Income Tax Intake Form (you can also find copies in our front office at 531 Canada Ave)
BC Renter’s Tax Credit:
The BC Renter’s Tax Credit is available to anyone who is paying rent in the province of BC and is NOT paying renting from a close relative, on a rent-to-own plan, employer is paying rent, a campsite, moorage or trailer (manufactured home) pad rent.

Eligibility for CVILRC’s Volunteer Income Tax Program
- Annual income for 1 person is below $40,000
- Simple tax situation
What qualifies as a simple tax situation?
- Employment
- Pension
- Benefits such as Canada Pension Plan, Old Age Security, Disability Insurance, Employment Insurance, and Social Assistance
- Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs)
- Scholarships, fellowships, bursaries, or grants
- Interest under $1000.00
We do NOT do the following taxes:
- Self-employment
- Business income and expenses
- Rental income and expenses
- Interest income over $1000.00
- Capital gains or losses
- Bankruptcy in the tax year
- Deceased
- Foreign property
- Foreign income
